South Carolina State Seal

The Great Seal of the State of South Carolina, adopted in 1776, is a symbol rich in historical significance and symbolism. Comprising two elliptical areas linked by palmetto tree branches, it depicts the victorious defenders of Sullivan's Island, represented by a standing palmetto tree, and the defeated British Fleet, symbolized by a fallen oak tree, stemming from the battle fought on June 28, 1776. Twelve spears encircle the palmetto, representing the original 12 states of the Union, while the motto "Quis separabit?" ('Who will separate [us]?') is prominently displayed. Below, the alternate state motto "Meliorem Lapsa Locavit" ("Having Fallen, She Has Set Up a Better One") is inscribed, along with the date 1776. The seal also features the Roman goddess Spes walking along a shore littered with weapons, holding a laurel branch as the sun rises behind her. The Latin motto "Dum spiro spero" ('While I breathe, I hope') accompanies this image. The full state achievement includes Liberty and a Continental soldier as supporters, with Fame above the shield. The Great Seal played a pivotal role in South Carolina's Ordinance of Secession on December 20, 1860, symbolizing the state's declaration of independence.
